In 2017, Paul Newman’s Rolex Daytona sold for a whopping $17.8 million, setting a record for a wristwatch at Phillips auction. When the hammer came down at Phillips auction house in New York after 12 minutes of nerve-wracking paddle raising, more than 400 people witnessed a telephone bidder become the proud owner of Paul Newman’s Rolex.

The legendary watch attracted both connoisseurs and motorsport enthusiasts, and high net worth individuals with a penchant for Hollywood memorabilia.

When the wristwatch went to auction, James Cox – a former boyfriend of Newman’s daughter Nell – had owned it since 1984, when Newman gave it to him. At that time, the model retailed for around $200.
